Welcome to the digital age where information is at your fingertips, a taxi can deliver your food, and you’re a click away from anything and everything!
The internet brought everyone so much closer, making it easier to connect with one another. As the digital age advances, so does our modes of screening the right candidate! Now recruiters from one side of the country can fill spots on the other side (check out our blog on How to Score Out-of-State Talent!) The best thing we can do is begin to use these digital tools to our advantage, and what better way to screen the right candidate than by conducting video interviews? This gives the recruiter the ability to meet with different candidates without having to fly or drive out of the office, and even opens up the job pool possibilities by giving the potential candidate that same flexibility!
Even though it seems like we’re all pretty tech savvy, here’s a few tricks on how to nail the video interview from the recruiter side:
Are you looking at me or…
Is your outfit killing it today? Or do you think you need a new haircut? Guess what – this is not the time to make those decisions! Looking at yourself is awesome, but during the video interview, steer clear of looking at the little box with your face in it! I know it’s tempting, but it’s important that you are looking directly at the camera and not on the screen! It’s the best way to maintain “eye-contact” even when you’re not face-to-face.
Here, Let Me Set the Mood
It’s not always just about how you look. How’re your surroundings? Are you in a crowded office with stark white walls or do you sit next to a crazy cool but also pretty dizzying mural? Keep an eye on your surroundings! You want to give the candidate a small glimpse into what the culture is like in your office, but you don’t want to overwhelm them with a crazy overly stimulating background that will take the focus off the questions! Make sure you’re in a good spot, check your lighting, and sit where you can talk freely.
Check Yo’ Tech
Yes, we all love our technology! Phones, laptops, tablets, OH MY! Most of us are on our devices all day long, but always check your technology prior to beginning the interview! Is your camera working? Microphone on? How’s your wifi connection? Make a tech checklist to ensure optimum video capabilities and to make sure there are no unwanted interruptions during the interview.
Let Me Hear Your Body Talk
So you’re not face-to-face but you are screen-to-screen! You may not think about it too often, but body language is a huge component of any conversation (55% body language, 38% tone of voice, and only 7% is actual verbal content). Sit up straight, don’t forget to smile (but not too much, we don’t wanna go all American Psycho on the candidate), and keep an upbeat tone! Even though it’s digital and not fully face-to-face, bring your A-game to entice the perfect candidate!
There you have it! Some really quick tips on how to successfully break into the digital space for interviews! The best advice that’s ever been said is to utilize your resources, and with the internet providing an endless amount of tools, let’s put it to use to our advantage!
